History.

The Aztecs used cacao beans as a currency and also to prepare the socalled xocolatl drink, which contained cocoa nibs, chillies, cloves, cinnamon and cornflour for thickening. The drink was considered an aphrodisiac. The Aztec king Montezuma drank up to 50 cups of chocolate a day. The first European to taste xocolatl was Christopher Columbus, but its taste didn´t make a great impression on him, and so it wasn´t until Hernando Cortez 20 years later who managed to arouse interest among Europeans in cacao beans.
